Wednesday 13 August: Wednesday Walk
The regular mid-week walk series
continues, close to Canberra
with a destination to be decided. Contact the leader before 8pm Tuesday to find out
destination and meeting place. Leader: Allan M.
Saturday 16 August:
Maginot Line – M/E/X
This walk is in the
western part of the Brindabella
National Park. From
Doctor’s Flat Road west
of Dingo Dell, we will walk along the Maginot fire trail and some others with
morning tea on Wombat Hill and lunch on Wombat Ridge. The walk is rated X
because I haven’t done it before but, judging from the map, there should be no
problems. The bush near Doctors
Flat Rd in this area is spectacular. Map: Umburra 1:25,000. Leader: Stan Marks 6254
9568(h), 6274 7350(w), stan.marks@infrastructure.gov.au
Transport: ~$10–15
Sunday 17 August: Mt
Palerang – M/R
A walk in the Tallanganda National Park. Bush bash up a ridge from
Mullon Creek to Mt Palerang. Mt Palerang on the Great
Diving Range
offers magnificent views of the Budawang
Range and Clyde
Mountain to the east, Lake George to
the north-west, and on a clear day, the waterspout on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra can be seen
clearly. Map: Bombay 1:25,000. Leader:
Roger E. Transport: $15
Tuesday 19 August:
Admiration Point – L/M
The views of Yadboro
and the southern Budawangs are admirable from Admiration Point. Most of this 21
km walk from the Wog Wog entrance to Morton
National Park is on
track, but there is some thick scrub to negotiate. A total climb of about 300
metres. Map: Corang
1:25,000. Leader: Philip G. Transport: $21. Limit:
8.
Saturday 23 August:
Wild Cattle Creek– M/M
This walk is south of Captains Flat in
the Tallaganda National Park. It is a wander, mostly
off track, along ridges through light, open forest and along the wide open valley of Wild Cattle Creek and other
watercourses. About 4 hrs actual walking. Return via the purple eatery. Map:

Sunday 24
August: Granite Tors – S-M/M-R
From the
Orroral Tracking Station site, the fire trail to the former lunar laser ranger
site passes magnificent granite outcrops. We will leave the trail to climb over
the outcrops, steadily ascending to a lookout over Orroral Valley.
Then back along the trail before leaving it again to descend to the valley past
more outcrops. The distance is short (8 km) but there is a 400 m altitude gain
and much rock scrambling. Map: Rendezvous Ck 1:25,000. Leader: Jeff B. Transport:
~$10. Limit: 12.
23–24 August: Mt Scabby
– L/M-R
From the Gudgenby
carpark, cross Gudgenby Saddle to Sams River Fire Trail, then climb to the
extensive granite slabs of Mt Scabby. Camp in NSW. The walk may be modified
depending on snow conditions. Map: Yaouk 1:25,000. Leader:
Meg M. Transport: ~$12
Saturday 30 August:
Worn Boot Bash #7– L/E
This annual event
involves 30–40 km and a few hills. To balance previous year’s route, this
year’s will take in a few dales as well. Meet at the National
Museum of Australia and be whisked in
air-conditioned comfort along the WBB route to Uriarra Crossing. Then just walk
back to your car, via the Lower Molonglo River Corridor Nature Reserve, Mt
Stromlo, Dairy Farmers Hill and the new arboretum and Black Mountain.
Around 12 hours walking. There are opportunities for a half WBB too, but there
would need to be a viable group. If walking at a different speed you would need
to organise pickup in Weston Creek. Maps: Canberra, Cotter Dam and Umburra 1:25000. Leader: John E. Transport:
Drive yourself to NMA; tell me if you need a lift when booking. Further
details at http: //jevans.pcug.org.au
Saturday 30 August: Mt
Foxlow– M/E-M
From the car park
just off Woolcara Lane
at the entrance to the Yanununbeyan Conservation Area, we will head off track
until we meet the Foxlow firetrail, then about 2 km up Foxlow itself for lunch.
Return initially along the firetrail then swing off track along a ridge through
attractive light forest to end the day. Short car shuffle, about 5½ hrs actual
walking. Map: Captains
Flat 1:25,000. Leader: Stan Marks 6254 9568(h), 6274 7350(w), stan.marks@infrastructure.gov.au
Transport: ~$15
Tuesday 2 September:
Stockyard Spur
From Corin Dam
follow the steep walking track to the fire trail on Stockyard Spur. Depending
on the conditions we will either follow the fire trail up towards Pryors Hut or
follow the fire trail down the spur to a point (just north of SH1272) where we
may get a glimpse of Bendora Dam. This may involve some off track walking.
Return via the same route. Total climb about 900 m. Total distance about 15 km.
Map: Corin Dam
1:25000. Leader: Mike B. Transport: ~ $12.
Saturday 6 September:
Photography and Drawing Day – Namadgi – S/M
We will spend the
day in the Nursery Hill/Rendezvous Creek area of Namadgi National Park
either photographing or drawing the scenery. Given that it is early Spring
there should be a few flowering plans as well. Plenty of time will be allowed
to stop and capture the natural beauty of the area either in macro or micro! Map:
Rendezvous Creek 1:25,000. Leader: John T. Transport: $10.
(5)6–7 September: Southern Highlands Bushwalking Bonanza –M/M
This weekend based
at the Bundanoon YHA includes two contrasting walks. Drive down Friday night.
Mt Carrialoo (to be led by Barry K on Saturday) is always brilliant and if you
like spectacular views and a bit of a challenge, you will love it. Sunday’s
walk is a mixture of ridges with views and a bit along a rain forest creek
before we emerge along an ancient logging road back to the cars. About 5 hrs
walking and a mixture of track and off track on both days. On Saturday evening,
an ‘everybody bring something’ meal. The YHA has a delightful ambience. Map:
