The program for a month usually covers walks from the second
Wednesday of the month to the second Wednesday of the following month.

Tuesday 12 February: Upper
Rendezvous Creek
– L/M-R,X
Visit
the source of Rendezvous Creek.
>From the Nursery
Swamp
car park, follow the Nursery Swamp
Walking Trail, then taped footpad over the saddle to Rendezvous Creek.
Walk
upstream on the SW bank, enjoying views up to granite heights on both
sides, to
the source in the saddle to the E of Split Rock. Return via the Australian Alps Walking Track.
Around 23 km and 600 m
total climb. Demanding walking for a fit and experienced party. Route
not fully
known to leader. Possible delays and diversions from the intended

Fools Gold Gully – S/R/X/W
From
the Bungonia
Nature Reserve descend to the Shoalhaven via Mt Ayre. Depending on
river
conditions cross the river and then a short exploration of Fools Gold
Gully.
Please note that the walk involves a steep 500 m descent/ascent. Map:

February: Coolamon Ridge again – S/E
Meet at
the very end
of Kathner
St,
Chapman for a walk along the ridge. No bookings, just turn up at 6.30

Tuesday
19 February: Blue Gum Creek – L/R,X
Follow
Blue Gum
Creek from east of Smokers Trail down creek flats and steep cuts. Walk
under
Blue Gum Hill and near Booroomba Rocks, then to the ford at Georges
Creek.
An old track then takes us to Blythburn Cottage, White Horse Flat and
up Punch
Bowl Creek. Forestry trails lead us back to the car. Around 21 km and
600 m
total climb. Demanding walking for a fit and experienced party. Route
not fully
known to leader. Possible delays and diversions from the intended

Meet at

the parking area on the northern side of Horse Park Drive
about 1.5 km toward
Gungahlin from its junction with the Federal Hwy
(the Gungahlin exit). Will probably do Gecko

Inaugural U35 Walk, Square Rock – S/E
A
morning trip for
under 35’s (see Walks Waffle); always a pleasant ramble. Map:

Visit Coal
Mine Falls, then continue down the lush gorge in/out and

February: Deua NP, The Big Hole and Marble Arch – M/M
We’ll
drive out via
Captains Flat and Tallaganda NP. This is a reasonably leisurely ramble
through
some heathland to the Big Hole and then some attractive open woodland
to the
Marble Arch. A torch may be useful when pottering around in the cavern
at the
Marble Arch. We’ll return the same way. The walk involves a
couple of steepish
climbs but they are reasonably short and should take about five hours

Sunday 24 February: Tantangara
Mountain
– M/M
Tantangara
Mtn is in
the northern part of Kosciuszko NP, near the Snowy Mts Hwy.
At 1745 m it has
sub-alpine vegetation and extensive views in all directions. The drive
is via
the Boboyan Rd. Map: Denison 1:25,000.

23–24 February: Corang
Peak and Corang Lagoon – M/M-R
Mostly
on walking
tracks, this walk is suitable for reasonably fit people who have had
little
weekend walking experience. Wog Wog Car Park – Corang Lagoon

Tas – Arthurs Range,
Frenchmans Cap
Incomparable
country! – and not so hard. The first week will traverse the
intricacies of the
Western Arthurs, and the second visit the majestic ‘Cap and
its extension to
Clytemnaestra or the Franklin River.
Come for either or

(29 Feb), 1–2 March: Mt
Townsend – L/E-M
At 2209
m, this is Australia’s
2nd
highest peak. I have never done it and plan to fix that. We will drive
down
Friday night and do Townsend on the Saturday. Mixture of on and off
track. We
will sleep at the Southern Alps Ski Club Lodge (shared meal Sat night).
Home on

Road. We will walk on some of
the

Black Mountain
– S/E
Meet
6.30 pm, park at end of Frith St near electricity sub-station for a
wander
around the low mountain to the north of the main peak and elsewhere in
the

8–10
March:
Morton NP, Byangee Walls – M/M/R, Monolith Valley
– M/M and Pigeon
House Mtn – S/M
We’ll
drive down early Saturday to the Yadboro campsite and pitch camp.
It’s a very
scenic walk from the Yadboro up to Byangee Walls via Cathedral
Cave,
the Natural Arch and Castle Gap. We’ll scramble up Byangee
for lunch on the
highest point on the plateau. It involves a bit of rock work.
We’ll return via
the same route. Early start Sunday to rocket up Kalianna Ridge, and
through to
Castle Saddle, via the base of this wonderful landmark. We’ll
aim to get to the
spectacular Monolith Valley and
possibly the
Green Room before retracing our steps. On Monday we’ll decamp
and drive over to
Pigeon House for the short but steep climb, for some more spectacular
views.
We’ll return to Canberra
via coast; if the weather is good we may stop for a swim along the way.

March:
Kanangra Base Camp – various grades
Kanangra
Walls is an isolated sandstone plateau, with outstanding views across
Kanangra
Gorge and over the southern Blue Mts. We will camp beside the cars at
Boyd
Crossing both nights. Saturday’s walk will be to granite Box
Ck Falls (S/R). On
Sunday Jeff will lead a trip over Kanangra Plateau to Crafts Wall and
beyond
(M/M) while Stan M will take a group around the plateau (S-M/E). On
Monday
morning Jeff will lead a walk to Mt Colboyd (S/R) while Stan will take
a group
to Jenolan
Caves.
All meet together before leaving
for Canberra
early Monday afternoon. Maps: Shooters
