Park

Be at
the northern
end of the airport side of the Campbell Park
offices car park at
6.30. The walk follows the track along the eastern side of the Ainslie
reserve
toward Mt Majura then loops back. No need to book. Map: n/a.

Sunday 13 January:
Johnstones Ck Amphitheatre – S/R
Johnstones
Ck is a
tributary of Bundanoon Ck. It is in semi-rainforest under sandstone
cliffs.
This is a very short walk to the natural amphitheatre around the
longnose point
I visited in October 2006 (MR 466561) but adding exploration of the
many cool
overhangs, a descent to and walk along the creek, and much time for
swimming or
relaxing. Some scrub and scrambling. Map: Wingello

January: Kowen
Forest
–
S/E
Go
down Sutton
Road about 1½ km from
its
intersection with Pialligo Rd
and Yass
Rd
to the Kowen
Rd.
Go down Kowen
Rd
until the junction where the road to Molonglo Gorge goes off to the
right.
There is a car park on the left. We will head along a road over the
escarpment.

14–16 January: KNP
– Leaning Rock Falls
– S/M, X
Down
the west side below Granite Peaks is
the tall slab of Leaning Rock,
and the fall under it is perhaps the remotest in KNP. The area has been
closed
after the ‘03 fires until recently; we’ll explore
down from Dicky Cooper Bogong
and return via Tate West Ridge, expect big Main Range
views. Map: Mt Kosciuszko. 1:5,000

Tuesday 15 January: 14r
feature and Pierce Hill – L/E-M,X
From a
convenient fire
trail in Pierces Creek forest, walk via the Tidbinbilla Range Road
through
Black Spring Mountain down to explore the 14r feature on a feeder to
Pierces
Creek. Back up to the road and, just to make a different way home, head
to
Pierce Hill. Exit the Tidbinbilla Range via
the fire trail
down the spur to the SE of Oakey Creek. All on fire trail except for
1.5 km and 200 m down to the falls. Around 15km and 700m total
climb. Maps:
Cotter Dam and Tidbinbilla 1:25000.

(25)26–28 January: Genoa
River
– M/R
A
relatively easy
weekend walk to a section of the Genoa River that
is not usually
reached in a weekend. A pleasant river walk with lots of rock hopping
and wet
feet, but no compulsory swims. We leave the cars at the picnic area at
GR152708
and walk south over the knoll between Mount
Wakefield
and Mount
Merragunegin.
When we hit the Genoa
River we
travel upstream along the Genoa River
to the Yambulla Creek junction. From this junction we head back to the
cars via
an overgrown track. Map: Yambulla 1:25000.

26–28 January 2008:
Kosciusko long weekend: various ratings
Leave Canberra
mid morning
Saturday. That afternoon we will do an off track walk of about 2hrs in
the
vicinity of Mt Stillwell. On Sunday, we will offer the iconic Blue
Lake-Main
Range-Kosciusko circuit (6hrs walking all on track) with its brilliant
views
and an off track alternative led by Ross A. On Monday morning, I will
offer a
walk of about 1 ¾ hrs at Sawpit Creek on the way home. Two
‘everyone bring
something’ meals in the evenings. Map: Perisher

Crags, Giant’s Castle – L/E-M, M/E-M
Two
Snowy Mtn day
walks with a car camp at Island Bend. (1) Watsons Crags protrudes far
into
Geehi Gorge while still exceeding 2000m altitude and offers tremendous
views.
Starts from Charlotte
Pass and
goes by Blue
Lake
lookout. All on track or through open alpine country but there are some
steep
climbs. (2) The Giant’s Castle is a granite formation at the
end of the
sub-alpine Rennix Walk. The walk order will be changed if
Sunday’s weather is
