16 May – MONTHLY CLUB MEETING
8:00pm
Main meeting room, St John’s Church Hall, Constitution Avenue, Reid
The
Mountain Pygmy-possum: an inevitable casualty of climate change? Presenter:
Dr Linda Broome, Broome, Senior Threatened Species Officer, NSW Department of
Environment and Climate Change
Extensive
surveys and research have shown that this endearing small possum is a true
alpine specialist. It does not occur below the winter snowline and spends the
winter hibernating under a blanket of snow. Recent trends in population numbers,
diminishing snow depths and forecasts of increasing global warming point to a
less than optimistic future for the species.

May – Kosciuszko National Park: Purgatory, Tin Mines Falls and the Cascade
Trail – M/M/X
For ‘almost-winter’ I’d
like to explore that low extension of the Main Range south of Dead Horse Gap
with the intriguing names - Jerusalem, Paradise… Stockwhip. They should
provide big views over the Snowy and youthful Murray, and up to high peaks of Mt
Kosciuszko and the Victorian Alps. The Cascade Trail offers a convenient return
path, and in between we’ll visit the fading history of the Tin Mine Huts and
nearby alluvial workings and Tin Mine Falls, the biggest single-drop in
Kosciuszko National Park. Total walking distance is about 55km. We’ll travel
Friday night and camp, or YHA ($25), at Thredbo. Map Thredbo 1:50000 Leader:

9 June – Mount Clear – L/M
This is a re run of my walk last July. Starting at the Mount Clear car park we follow the Naas Valley fire trail for 3 kms, then make the way through the forest to Mt Clear summit. After this I plan to follow the Mt Clear fire trail south for 2 to 3 kms and then head through the forest in a SSW direction to the north end of Long Flat and then walk back to the cars via the fire trail. Anyone coming on the trip needs to realise it is about 25kms long with a bit more than 600m of climbing. Maps: Colinton and Bredbo 1:25000; ACT Region 1:100000 Leader: TimW Transport: minimum $14

June – Morton National Park: Bibbenluke and Mt Owen – M/M-R
We
were rained out last year and never made it to Mt Owen, so I’d like to try
again. Saturday: Wog Wog car park to the Bibbenluke Mountain campsite via
Corang Peak and Arch, Conglomerate slopes and Burrumbeet Brook. We’ll base
camp here for the weekend. Sunday - we’ll explore the Mt Owen and Mt
Cole area. This will require some rock scrambling to get onto Mt Owen - the
rough bit. Monday - we’ll return via the same route with a side trip to
the Yurnga Lookout for some great views. Map: Corang 1:25000 Leader:
